Recommended Reading: I find David Eisenbud’s “Commutative Algebra with a View Toward Algebraic Geometry” to be a readable and comprehensive reference, but you do not need a copy to follow this course.

 Erik has written up some general instructions for writing problem set solutions on his website. He may refer to these instructions while marking the homework.
August 28: Grading
 60%: Homework. Each assignment is posted on Tuesday and due by email to Erik by the beginning of the next class (11:15am on Monday). The lowest two of the twelve homework scores are dropped.
 40%: Written Final Exam. The exam is scheduled for 2:005:00 on Wednesday, January 13 in room 174. The resit time is 10:001:00 on Thursday, March 10, also in room 174.
